Our History

The birth of our beauty creation and communication activities

In 1922, an American cosmetologist from New York, Helen Grossman, was invited to Japan to help fill the need for full-fledged hairdressers trained in Western techniques that went beyond traditional hairstyling. Grossman herself served as a model and held seminars and demonstrations of new hairdressing and beauty techniques in major cities across Japan. These popularized the "over-ear" hairstyle, which revolutionized women's hairstyles in the late Taisho and early Showa periods. This was the beginning of Shiseido's communication of beauty techniques, an activity that we have passed down through the generations to Shiseido's hair and makeup artists today.
