"The title of the exhibit “Katachibito” means “beautiful person” in ancient Japanese. Beauty is not limited to the outward appearance, but also resides within an individual. The Japanese word for makeup is derived from the word “kewai,” which is synonymous with the word “kehai” (sign). In a way, beauty can be sensed from these invisible “signs” and how a person presents themself.

Makeup can also serve as a connection to society. By expressing yourself through hair and makeup, it can boost confidence and push you to take a step forward. It can even be said that hair and makeup have the power to bring out one’s inner radiance.

For this exhibit, Yuriko Takagi, a photographer who has been capturing people all over the world from her own unique perspective, including for fashion shoots, has collaborated with Hirofumi Kera. As a hair and makeup artist from Sado Island, Kera’s aim for this exhibit has been to bring out the true charm of the residents of Sado Island through the power of hair, makeup, and photography while creating art that captures their beautiful lives."(Kera)
